Recently my wife and I were wandering around a pawn shop (as we're wont to do) and we came across an interesting display of plates! They were extremely beautiful but this beauty came at a steep price, $100 per plate or $500 for the set of six. Well out came our phones so we could check if anything similar has sold on eBay in the past couple months. Sure enough! A similar set of 6 had sold for (what appeared to be) $1,395 plus shipping! Now did we have $500 sitting around to spend on 6 plates? No, but if that could be translated into a quick $800 payoff then by George we could do it. Fortunately we didn't get quite swept up into our self-created hype and put in our due diligence before carrying the plates up to the register. Check out how we discovered the much less exciting amount the plates actually sold for...
The Best Offer Feature
The Best Offer Feature is an often used tool when selling on eBay. It is often employed for items that are worth a large amount, have been listed for awhile without selling, or have a buyer unsure of its worth. (It can also be used to create perceived value, check out our post next week on this subject)
While it is a useful tool, it can be frustrating for those of us who always check completed listings before decided whether or not to purchase an item. The plates we talked about above were a pretty rare item and there were only a couple listed in the "Sold" section. Unsure of how to price it, this is how we went about finding the actual sale price.
Click on the "History" link. This will take you to eBay where you will be able to see all the offers made on an items and whether the offers where accepted, expired, or declined.
So here we can see the amount that our $500 plates have sold for recently...
$700?! Not shabby if we had inherited the plates from our stuffy old grandmother but definitely not worth risking $500 for. While we wouldn't have lost money in this case, it certainly wouldn't have been the windfall we were looking for and we were happy to walk away plate-less.
